Welcome to the shalala mailing-list
Would it be possible to extend an invitation to Victor Hernandez who has a
pop radio show at WMBR? He is a definite pop enthusiast who is eager to
learn more about stuff.
His email is vlhdezp@MIT.EDU . I'm sure he would
be eager to join if there still exists room.

Subject: Shalala: Welcome to the shalala mailing-list
Hi everybody,
although I don't think I am absolute prepared for this thing
yet,
I want to start it.
Right now we are a very small group:
Alexander Baily
Andreas Hering
Ara Hacopian
Catherine
Daniel Chan
Henrik Engstrom
Jim Curran
John Koliopanos
Keith D'Arcy
Leonard Roberge
Matt Neimark
Matthew Kaplan
Mick McMick
Peter Hahndorf
Stephen Burt
Stephen Wood
Torbjörn Thorsén
Yuanmin Liu
we invited about 40 more but I haven't heard from them yet.
first some administrative information:
- this is the first time I am maintaining a mailing-list, so
I have
to learn some things on the way.
- as this is invitation only, there are no usual subscribe
and
unsubscribe commands, all messages to majordomo go into
devnull,
meaning they are deleted unread. If you want to unsubcribe
send
a message to listadmin@--hidden--, there is not syntax
for
that.
- to write to the list send your messages to
shalala@--hidden--
maybe you see something like shalala@--hidden--
somewhere in
the headers, "lists" is just an alias name for the internal
name of
the server which is "atticus". shalala@--hidden-- is the
official name. It is okay to reply to
shalala@--hidden--
- although I have set up an URL (lists.twee.net) for the
associated
web-site, there is not much there yet. I will set up an
archive, so
other people can read the messages as well.
- there is no digest of this list yet, I need some time to
play
with that function. I hope we wont generate too much traffic
and that everybody has an e-mail client which filters
specific
messages in separate mail-folders anyway.
Please let me know if you really need a digest.
- only people on the list are allowed to post to the list,
if
you are using another e-mail sender address than the one you
are subscribed with, your message wont make it to the list.
- although Tim outlined the topics for this list in the
invitation
message, I think the proposed list-content needs more
discussion.
I will forward a message from Alexander to kick this off.
please send questions to listadmin@--hidden--
more later
Pete
Peter,
I'm just writing to say that I'm currently experiencing some problems with
my ISP. Some email bounces apparantely. But I hope you'll be patient with
me, my guess is that the problems will be over soonish.
Cheers,
Henrik
Hi Peter
Can you change my email address in the shalala list to minliu2000@--hidden--?
I am trying to phase out this account. Thanks.
Min
Hello,
Unfortunately I'm at my girlfriend's apartment right now, and
won't be back until monday. Until then, I'm going to have to use Telnet
mail to write, so please forgive the lack of signature, ability to create
a new subject header, etc.
The decision not to include labels like El was discussed a bit.
Not really knowing much beyond a handful of bands on the label, I proposed
including it. However, my comrades pointed out that, much like Cherry Red,
there were bands on El who would be quite in line with the things we
wanted to discuss on this list, but at the same time, there were many who
were not.
Luckily we can probably include Felt through the connection with
Creation, for a mailing list about pop such as this without Felt would be
a strange thing indeed. But it would be sad not to hear about bands such
as the Would-Be-Goods, or even Louis Phillippe (sp?).
As far as labels like Factory go, they had some great bands, but I
really don't think anyone would want to see a long-winded discussion
about Quango Quango. I'm not as familiar with Crepuscle or Rough Trade
bands not the Smiths.
The basic idea here is that you should use your discretion, but if
any of the labels mentioned above contain a band you want to discuss, ask
yourself if it is similar to the above-mentioned list of labels and
sounds. If so, feel free to include it in a discussion.
That is to say, we couldn't include a lot of labels in our list
because it wouldn't define the ideas we wanted to explain. But that
doesn't mean that we want to restrict discussion to precisely the labels
mentioned above.
As well, though we may not have explained it terribly well in the
initial message, I think the consensus was to include bands which
influenced the listed labels, as well as bands influenced BY the listed
labels. So, bands like Sweet William, the Shermans, the Fairways, the Acid
House Kings, or Brideshead would be perfectly fine topics of discussion.
And to respond to queries of virtual ladies, we invited some, just
not many (none?) have yet replied... If you know people who would possibly
enjoy being on this list, please write to Pete and I and the next time we
are able to add more people, and we'll try to use your suggestion.
Anyway, please keep up the discussion.
