Re: SF Popfest, Day One
i haven't heard a ton of the music lovers, but they sounded more in the vein of tindersticks, divine comedy, scott walker, etc. the mp3s i heard were really gorgeous. two of them are british, including primary singer/songwriter mathew edwards. one is irish and one is japanese, according to their old bio. i've nicked it off their site:
The Music Lovers are based around the singing and songwriting of Matthew 'Ted' Edwards. Matthew was born in Small Heath in England on an extraordinarily hot summers day in 1968; and raised on a rich diet of archaic folklore, show tunes and Punk Rock. Matthew has been invalided, imprisoned, married (4 times) and homeless. He has traversed the globe twice, living at various times in New York City and Greece. Matthew has sung since the age of 13 and has performed on Scandinavian cruise ships, Italian Marxist clubs and all points in between. He wrote his first song at the age of 9É Other than music Matthew has been gainfully employed as an apprentice bespoke tailor, a parks ranger and a bingo caller. In his cups Matthew has been known to believe himself to be the bastard progeny of Dusty Springfield and Vic Godard. He has written two as yet un-produced musicals. Matthew leads a hermetical existence with his cats in San Francisco.
Matthew is more than ably supported in his saga by the followingÉ Jon Brooder, who plays the bass guitar. Jon is a native of Brixton in London where in 1992 he was voted 'London's best looking window cleaner' by readers of The Evening Standard.
Jun Kurihara plays piano and accordion, and co-sings the duets. Jun was previously a member of Japanese cult pop legends The Nelories.
Colin Sherlock plays drums,. Colin is a native of County Meath in Ireland. Bryan Cain plays electric guitar, and collects art.ÊOn occasion, The Music Lovers are accompanied byÊLeigh Jurecka on violin.
The Music Lovers first concert was in New York City in November 2001. In early 2002 The Music Lovers signed to Marriage Records, a label created for them by Le Grand Magistery founder Matthew Jacobson. and wife Leigh Jurecka. Marriage Records released The Music Lovers debut EP 'Cheap Songs Tell the Truth' in November 2003. It was play-listed on college stations throughout the United States, and received airplay on national radio in France and Canada. The EP received phenomenal press for a first release.
The groups first album - 'The Words We Say Before We Sleep' follows in June 2004. The Music Lovers are currently recording songs for a further album release for early '05. Thus far, Ted or The Music Lovers have shared bills with acts as diverse as The Divine Comedy, Errase Errata, Clem Snide, Hem, and The Tindersticks. The group will tour during 2004.

I don't know much about The Music Lovers. They're on Le Grande Magistery and even though the Popfest website says their from SF, most of them looked and seemed like they were from England. It was a nice set. I must admit that it was not my cup of tea, but it was still very enjoyable.
