Had never heard them before, but Red Pony Clock were pure delight, and I was heartily thankful that I had come early. Totally shambolic and yet just totally getting business done, pushing through in their mildly abrasive marching band way. Proceedings looked after/blessed by (my maniacal grin and) the watchful beneficence of the spirit of a(n otherwise absent) tuba. Was told by a band member after the show that they sometimes *do* have a tuba in the line up. If it's not too much, I hereby proclaim 2006 as the year of the tuba... If RPC were happily channeling the ghost of a tuba, unfortunately in the California Oranges' vocals I heard church choir practice. Sorry... Not sure if I liked the new Music Lovers songs as much as the more familiar (and faster) material from their first album. "Virginia Lights" in particular was sublime. Definitely heard that Divine Comedy-esque persona type in there... Human Television were new to me and just totally spot-on, articulate. Can't imagine their star not being on the rise...
